About Heart 2 Heart
Heart 2 Heart (H2H) is an extension of the Incarcerated Children’s Advocacy Network (ICAN) that was launched in 2020. It is a first-of-its-kind, national network made up of female-identified leaders who were incarcerated as children. In 2022, H2H expanded to include female-identified champions and advocates outside of the ICAN network. While many of the struggles of formerly incarcerated youth are similar, here at the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth (CFSY) we recognize that women who were given extreme sentences in childhood were and continue to be faced with challenges that are unique.
Heart 2 Heart’s Mission
H2H is committed to creating a truly equitable, healing atmosphere of support for all female-identified members of ICAN and other selected female-identified members outside the network who share the same values and mission of the CFSY. H2H gives them a space to let their guards down, be vulnerable, and explore what healing means for them, both individually and collectively.
As an extension of ICAN, we aim to support the healing and uplift the voices of the female-identified members by:
- Creating a safe and judgment free space for female-identified ICAN members and allies to discuss topics that are important to them. H2H holds monthly Heart 2 Heart Conversations support group meetings as well as regularly scheduled individual check-ins.
- Providing community care, resources, training, and educational opportunities for H2H members to help them become successful in their communities and empower them to use their voices for change.
- Speaking as women and subject-matter experts—grounded in lived experience and transformation—to reshape harmful narratives about incarcerated youth and elevate the realities of incarceration, particularly for female-identified youth.
- Engaging key stakeholders to help inform inform more equitable, trauma-responsive policies and practices that center dignity, healing, and opportunity for every young person.
