HireICAN.org provides the information and resources you need to become a fair chance employer, including access to candidates for hire. ICAN – Incarcerated Children’s Advocacy Network – is the first of its kind in the nation, made up entirely of individuals who were given life without parole or other extreme prison sentences when they were children, and are now home and are leaders in their communities and in our movement.
Why Hire ICAN Members?
They are extraordinary human beings
ICAN members have overcome the unimaginable. They have survived decades in prison, social isolation and many forms of oppression and are now home giving back to their communities and making positive contributions to society.
They are highly resilient individuals. Many earned certificates, degrees and skills while in prison, despite the odds, and they are motivated to succeed and make a life for themselves.
They are excellent employees
People with criminal records have lower rates of turnover and absenteeism, and higher rates of enthusiasm for learning new tasks on the job, compared to those without a criminal record.
Insurance and worker’s comp claims are no higher for fair chance employers, compared with employers who don’t hire people with criminal records.
Support racial equity, and meet your diversity and inclusion goals
More than 70% of ICAN members are people-of-color; the majority are black. (Black children are given JLWOP at a rate of 10x per capita compared to white children.)
ICAN members overwhelmingly come from communities plagued by racism, poverty and marginalization.
Fair chance hiring is economic justice
People with criminal records, particularly those who were imprisoned as children, experience depressed wages and higher rates of unemployment for the rest of their lives.
People who have spent time in prison miss out on more than half the future income they might otherwise have earned.
Providing livable wage jobs to ICAN members helps minimize wage disparities and interrupt intergenerational poverty.
You have no reason not to
People sentenced to juvenile life without parole have a less than 2% recidivism rate (far, far lower than the general average).
ICAN members have grown out of childhood immaturity; they take responsibility for their actions; and they have spent years (sometimes decades) working towards redemption and freedom.
